Description

The newly appointed chief justice: "Like the Old Mother in the Shoe I need 10 arms & far more time & energy than one day gives"

ALS signed “Warren,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.75 x 7.75, Supreme Court letterhead, August 5, 1969. Letter to the Hon. George T. Washington, on the difficulties of his new office as chief justice. In part: "Vera and I greatly appreciated your call in those hectic hours. Sometime we will tell you of this 60 day period—its stresses & its rewards in the form of messages from nearly a thousand Fed and State judges—most of whom I did not know at all. It has been a time of no little difficulty & I am laboring mightily to get my new office organized. Like the Old Mother in the Shoe I need 10 arms & far more time & energy than one day gives. But somehow we will get the job done." In fine condition, with minor bleeding to a couple words of text. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. Burger had been nominated to the chief justice position by President Nixon and sworn in on June 23, 1969.
