Description

Handsome official off-white 5 x 3 card bearing the crest of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, signed in fountain pen, "Edward, Duke of Windsor" and "Wallis Windsor." Beautifully suede-matted in deep red and framed with a portrait of the couple taken circa 1936 to an overall size of 25.25 x 19.25. In very good to fine condition, with some light creases, and a thin strip of toning passing through Wallis's signature.

Edward was a popular member of the royal family and heir to the throne. In 1931, then known as the Prince of Wales, Edward met and fell in love with American socialite Wallis Simpson. After George V's death, the prince became King Edward VIII. However, because his marriage to Simpson, an American divorcée, was forbidden, Edward abdicated the throne after ruling for less than a year. Thereafter, he took the title Duke of Windsor and embarked on a jet-setting life with his new wife. He died in France in 1972; and the Duchess in 1986.

Provenance: Signature card acquired by Dr. Brian A. King of Atlanta, GA by descent from his Grandfather, George King upon his death in 1985. George King acquired the card in the 1960s through the request of a friend, who was an employee of the Waldorf Towers in New York City where the Windsors kept a residence. The picture was framed in the late 1990s.
