Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (born 1777) from 1836 until his death in 1864. Before holding that office, Taney served as secretary of the treasury and attorney general. Uncommon 2 x 3.5 carte-de-visite portrait of Chief Justice Taney in a full-length pose, vertically signed and inscribed on the reverse in black ink, "For Miss Molly Smith, from R. B. Taney." Archivally triple-matted and framed to an overall size of 9.5 x 11; the backing has a window for viewing the signature. In fine condition.
