Description

Monk and Stitt play the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Vintage program for the 3rd Annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival held between April 26-30, 1972, twenty pages, 8.5 x 11, signed inside on the same page next to their respective images in blue ballpoint, "Thelonious Monk," and in blue fountain pen, "Sonny Stitt." In fine condition, with light toning to the covers; interior pages are clean an unaffected. Monk and Stitt were members of an all-star ensemble "The Giants of Jazz,” which also included Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding, Al McKibbon, and Art Blakley, all of whose images are on the same page of the program. They had toured and recorded in Europe in 1970 and 1971. The group performed on Saturday, April 29th at the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium during the festival's 'Night of Stars,' appearing alongside other acts like Nina Simone, B. B. King, Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, the Tuxedo Brass Band, and the Mardi Gras Indians. Idiosyncratic pianist, composer, and arranger, Thelonious Monk (1917-1982) takes a place among the most innovative and influential figures of modern jazz. Prolific American saxophonist Sonny Stitt (1924-1982) is best known for his work in the bebop and hard bop styles.
