Dickens is likely referring to the collection of ’Our Shakespeare Club,’ co-founded in 1861 by George Dawson, who desired to establish in Birmingham a Shakespeare Library containing 'every edition and every translation of Shakespeare; all the commentators, good, bad and indifferent; in short, every book connected with the life or works of our great poet.’ The club's collection ultimately became what is now the ‘Shakespeare Memorial Room’ on the top floor of the Library of Birmingham.
