Description

US Army officer (1828-1868) who participated in the Seminole Wars and Civil War, remembered as a hero for defending Fort Pickens from Confederate attack early on in the war. A lengthy collector's notation below states, "These autographs were written as Lieut. and Mrs. Slemmer passed through Philadelphia immediately after their return from Fort Pickens," and recounts how Slemmer was forced to abandon Fort Barrancas, relocate to Fort Pickens, and there resist Confederate attack for three months until the arrival of Union relief.
