Description

"My indisposition is very slight but yet one which requires my remaining off of my feet entirely"

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, State of New York, Executive Chamber letterhead, August 20, 1929. Letter to Reverend John Merritt Hunter, in full: "I very greatly regret that I have been compelled at the last moment to forego the pleasure of visiting Delhi. As you have been advised, my indisposition is very slight but yet one which requires my remaining off of my feet entirely, to bring about an immediate response in the way of a cure. I feel rather keenly about having to disappoint you at the last moment, particularly since I know you have made extensive plans for affording me a most pleasant time. You may be sure that I greatly appreciate what you have done and hope shortly to be able to tell you personally." Roosevelt adds a brief handwritten postscript: "I will come some day!" An ink notation at the conclusion, presumably made by the recipient, affirms that Roosevelt made the trip in August 1930. In very good to fine condition, with several intersecting folds.
