Description

The Impressionist in an empty theater

ALS in French, signed “Renoir,” one page, 4 x 5.25, no date. Letter to a friend, about attending the dress rehearsal of a production. In part (translated): "My dear friend…as there won't be anyone [at the dress rehearsal], that's the one I will attend. If it appeals to you, come along." In fine condition, with scattered light foxing. Theater and circus venues were popular subjects for the Impressionists; theatergoers were a particular favorite for Renoir, who captured audiences in paintings such as 'La Loge' and 'La Premiere Sortie.'
