Description

Philosopher and psychologist (1842-1910) who taught philosophy at Harvard and became known as one of the founders of pragmatism; he is also remembered as the brother of novelist Henry James. ALS signed “Wm. James,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, personal letterhead, January 16, 1907. Letter to Mrs. Ruutz-Rees, in part: "I am sorry for what you write me of Cohen, especially for the element of dissatisfying those with whom he has to work. There is no opening for anyone at Harvard just now, or, if there were, would there be a chance for Cohen. I admire and respect him but he has his drawbacks—I doubt whether his wife may not prove one of them! But he'll make his way somehow—see what he has done!…Miss Hillard has written me of a remarkable test you recently had from a medium…Could you very briefly give me a hint of the class of it?" An interesting letter that shows James's interest in spiritualism, because he speaks of a medium. In fine condition.
