Description

Warren writes to his biographer

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Court of the United States, Chambers of the Chief Justice letterhead, December 14, 1954. Letter to author Irving Stone, in part: "First I apologize for not answering sooner your letter to me concerning the invitation to speak at the National Biennial Convention of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations in Los Angeles on February 16th. I wish I could accept, but we will be in the middle of our Court Term at that time, and things will be very brisk here. I wrote Rabbi Eisendrath to that effect. It was very thoughtful of you to ask Doubleday to send us a copy of Love Is Eternal. I know from the reviews that it is wonderfully well done, but frankly I have not had an opportunity yet to read it. I am sure it is not difficult for you to understand the reason why. Since coming here a year ago, I have spent most of my waking hours reading, but the vast majority of it has been in connection with the work of the Court. I am looking forward, however, to reading your book, and I may even have an opportunity to do so during the holiday." In fine condition. Irving Stone was an American writer of biographical novels of artists, politicians, and intellectuals; among his four nonfiction books was his biography of Earl Warren, which was published in 1948. The noted Love is Eternal was an historical novel based on the marriage of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd.
