His 1937 film The Life of Emile Zola won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Two documents: an official letter from Vanguard Films, one page, February 4, 1944, affirming that they are exercising an option in a prior agreement, signed at the conclusion in black ink by Dieterle; and an agreement between Loew's Incorporated and Dieterle, 22 pages, April 13, 1942, in which the former "hereby employs and engages the director to render his exclusive services as a motion picture director for and during the term of this agreement," signed at the conclusion in black ink by Dieterle.
