Three days earlier, Roosevelt had earned a resounding win in the 1940 United States presidential election, defeating Republican candidate Wendell Willkie to secure his unprecedented third term in office. Wright was a United States diplomat who served as the twentieth and last Third Assistant Secretary of State. President Roosevelt appointed Wright as Envoy to Czechoslovakia in 1934.
