Description

"Why do I always have to get such offers from others," Woolrich asks of agent H. N. Swanson, "and why don't I get them from you?"

American writer (1903-1968) who is best known for his crime fiction; his story It Had to Be Murder served as the source for Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Rear Window. TLS signed “Cornell,” two pages, 6 x 9, Hotel Marseilles letterhead, February 17, 1945. Letter to "Swanie," his agent H. N. Swanson, in part: "Lippincott are sending you two copies of I Wouldn't Be In Your Shoes, in which Nightmare is included, at my request, as per your wire. I received Black Angel contracts, and am going ahead with them, but only because I originally gave you my okay on the deal. The price is lousy, and the whole thing isn't even worth the effort of going around getting all those outside assignments signed. I'll never again sign anything at such a price, under any circumstances. Incidentally, why does Avon Pocket-Books come into it? They're just a reprint house. Is this the usual procedure? It's a new one on me. The telegram I enclose speaks for itself. I want you to see it. Why do I always have to get such offers from others, and why don't I get them from you? And this isn't the first such offer, by any means. Along with this, and from the same source, I received an offer of $7,500 for a book of shorts, After-Dinner Story. When I refused this, I was told, unofficially, that it might be possible to work it up to $8,500." In fine condition.
