French military officer (1725-1807) who made a substantial contribution to the American Revolution, including a leading role in the defeat of Lord Cornwallis at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. ALS in French, signed “Rochambeau,” one page, 8 x 12.5, May 20, 1794. An untranslated order concerning passes for the return of officers to France, apparently sent to Newport. In fine condition, with some light edge toning.
