Description

Clay seeks a pension for a "poor deaf boy"

ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 8 x 9.75, March 15, 1818. In full: "I reply to your letter of yesterday, I regret to have to say that the Pension Committee, to which was referred the petition of the poor deaf boy, has made an unfavorable report. At my instance it was however laid upon the table & I propose making an effort, when the general subject of pensions is acted upon, to get the house to reverse that decision. If my feelings and judgment do not deceive me as to what those of others will & ought to be, I think that effort will be successful. Whatever may be the result we shall, at all events, have the consolation of not having failed in our duty." In very good condition, with multiple intersecting folds, creasing, and edge toning.
