Description

Painter and illustrator (1832-1883) known for his illustrated editions of books by Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Milton, and others. ALS in French, signed “Gu. Dore,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, March 12, 1879. Letter to English society artist Frank Miles, in part (translated): "I received in perfect state the beautiful and rare flower cuttings that you…sent me & I wanted to tell you how touched I was at your amiable and charming keepsake. The gardener to whom I confided the dear embryos told me that this summer they would make the glory of my little garden…When I see these beautiful lillies…I will think of the charming head that you drew and which you very ingeniously gave as a crown a bouquet of these flowers of innocence…I will make my way up to London as early as possible to give myself the pleasure of seeing your new productions and the fruit of your young and valiant efforts. I want to see that you have continued your oil painting studies." Affixed inside a presentation folder. In fine condition, with intersecting folds and some light stains.
