Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744-1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as 'gerrymandering.' Partly-printed DS, signed “E. Gerry,” one page, 14.5 x 9, May 22, 1812. As governor of Massachusetts, Gerry appoints Daniel Longfellow to be "Lieutenant of a Company in the first Regiment of Infantry in the Second Brigade, and Tenth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth." Signed on the left side by Gerry and countersigned by Benjamin Homans as secretary. Also includes Longfellow's 3.5 x 2.5 membership card for the Washington Benevolent Society, signed by two officers of the club. The white paper seal affixed to the upper left remains intact. In very good condition, with irregular overall toning.
