Partly-printed DS, one page, 16 x 12.5, April 16, 1792. Governor Hancock appoints Ezra Sawyer as “Captain of a Company of Cavalry in the Seventh Division of Militia of this Commonwealth, comprehending the County of Worcester.” Beautifully signed in the left border by Hancock, and countersigned by John Avery, Jr., as secretary. The large paper seal remains crisp and affixed to upper right. In very good to fine condition, with professional repairs to separations of intersecting folds on reverse, a vertical crease through a single letter of signature, scattered light toning and foxing, and a bit of scattered light paper loss along fold junctions. Sawyer was the son of a Revolutionary War commander who briefly lived in New York State before returning to the family homestead in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was sometime following his return in which he received the offered appointment from Hancock, who, essentially then a figurehead governor due to failing health, would die just over a year later. Sawyer served in the War of 1812, where he and his regiment partook in the defense of Boston during a fall 1814 battle.
