Description

Three years before his death—"I'm going to be the Nr. 1 Star and Actor in the world"

ALS signed “Nick,” seven pages, 8.5 x 11, Tokyo Hilton letterhead, July 5, 1965. Letter to publicist Russell Birdwell, in part: "Your final story on David O. Selznick was really fantastic. I never before knew the behind the scenes story of 'Gone With The Wind' and your words carried me back to the those colorful days and inspired my imagination to continue on now toward the same goals that D.O.S., Gable, etc. had in those days…to be very honest about the whole thing, D.O.S. hadn't done anything worthwhile for years. And that last bomb he made with Rock Hudson 'Farewell to Arms' was a pile of expensive garbage. What I'm driving at is the fact that many people had forgotten about all the great films he had made thru the years…Therefore you gave D.O.S. truly the greatest tribute he could have ever received…I admire and respect D.O.S. in more words than I could ever hope to write and I admire and respect you in the very same way…I will be home from Japan next week, July 14 or 15th. I will call you as soon as I get in because I am anxious to sit down and talk with you about many things. I think we have much in common and I think that maybe we should try and get together in a professional way because I am going right to the top of the ladder and I sincerely believe that starting this year it is the beginning of the really big time for me. I know my trade and I know the Motion Picture business throughout the world like the back of my hand. I work 24 hours a day, I've got guts and there isn't a person, place or thing in this world that I fear. I don't fear God. I love him as he loves me. I have a World Wide audience appeal and acceptance. I've got two fists and I know how to use them. I'm an American all the way and proud of it. I like Mom's apple pie and John Wayne. I'm loved by some, feared by some and hated by some. But only those that don't know me, hate me. Regardless of all that, I'm here to stay. I'm going to make my mark and leave a heritage and an example bigger than D.O.S. or Gable, and I mean that with all due respect for D.O.S., Gable and the others. Bogart, Garfield, Cagney, Tracy, all have left their mark and their heritage. I admire, respect and idolize all of them. But now it's my turn and I'm pulling out all stops. I'm going to be the Nr. 1 Star and Actor in the world and I know we can do it together." In fine condition. After a number of strong yet ultimately unrewarding television roles, Adams traveled to Japan in early 1965 to star in a pair of science fiction monster films by Toho Studios—Frankenstein Conquers the World and Invasion of Astro-Monster, the latter an entry in the Godzilla franchise. Adams remained active during the next two years—he made two more films in Japan and also starred in Die, Monster, Die! with Boris Karloff—but his hopeful return to American film and television only resulted in a variety of low-budget affairs. Demoralized at his lack of stardom, Adams took his own life at the age of thirty-six, less than three years after writing this letter.
