Description

Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 11.25, September 13, 1841. President Tyler appoints James D. Doty as "Governor of the Territory of Wisconsin." Prominently signed at the conclusion by President Tyler and countersigned by Secretary of State Daniel Webster. The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains mostly intact with one point missing. In fine condition, with scattered light toning. With this appointment, Doty became the second governor of the Wisconsin Territory; it was Doty who conceived the idea of the city of Madison, and lobbied aggressively to make it the territory's capital.
