War-dated TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Allied Force Headquarters letterhead, May 17, 1943. Letter to Tex Chandler, in part: "It was a great treat to have your note; but when I was trying to decide just how to address you, I couldn't figure out whether you were a Captain or from there anything else on up to a Major General. On top of that, I'll be darned if I remember your first name—I don't think I ever called you anything but 'Tex.' You can well imagine how I would like to have you in this theater. However, it is not too easy to manage in asking for an individual by name…This is by agreement with the War Department, where they are plagued all the time by special requests involving personnel. I am entitled to one other aide up to the grade of Lieutenant Colonel and, of course, we might always work the shenanigan of getting you on that basis and then transferring you to a job of Bomber Command. My own ship is a B-17, flown by Captain Reedy. I keep the same crew and ship all the time…It wasn't built to carry passengers, as you know, but because of its defensive gun power, I can fly around in it anywhere without the necessity of detailing a lot of fighter escort, which is always expensive."
