Description

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Navy Department, Assistant Secretary's Office letterhead, November 3, 1917. Letter to prominent Massachusetts lawyer and former Chair of the Federal Reserve Charles Sumner Hamlin, in part: "I am afraid that the Bureau of Navigation, to which Bureau Mr. Vahey's matter was referred, misunderstood the situation. The men now taking the special course at Annapolis all took the examination for commission as Ensign and were designated for the Annapolis course in the order in which they stood on the register established as a result of the examination. It is expected that another examination will be held in the near future, and what young Vahey will have to do is to get the recommendation of his Commanding Officer to the Commandant of the naval district in which he is on duty. If his Commanding Officer will recommend him, I have no doubt that he will be allowed to take the examination, and, of course, if he passes the examination he will be commissioned." In fine condition, with light soiling and faint diagonal envelope-related stains.
