Description

Manuscript DS, signed “B. Disraeli,” one page, 9.5 x 14.75, March 4, 1843. Official declaration of the death of William George Meredith, in part: "I Benjamin Disraeli of Grosvenor Gate Hyde Park in the County of Middlesex Esquire Member of Parliament for the Borough of Shrewsbury do hereby solemnly & sincerely declare that I was personally acquainted with William George Meredith the Son of George Meredith of Nottingham Place…in the County of Middx Esqr that in the Summer of the year one thousand eight hundred & thirty one I was travelling in Egypt with the said William George Meredith when he was taken ill of the small pox & was with him at the time of his decease which happened on the nineteenth day of July 1831 & was also present at his Burial." Signed at the conclusion by Disraeli. In very good to fine condition, with multiple intersecting folds, light foxing, and archival tape reinforcement to separation along the central horizontal fold. Meredith and Disraeli were close friends and former Bloomsbury neighbors who often traveled together. At the time of his death, Meredith was engaged to Disraeli's sister Sarah.
