Carleton as "Second Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Dragoons in the service of the United States." Signed at the conclusion by Van Buren, and countersigned by Secretary of War Joel R. Poinsett. White War Department seal remains affixed to upper left. In fine condition, with light toning and soiling.
