Description

Johnston sets the record straight concerning a botched promotion

US Army officer (1807-1891) who served in the Mexican-American War and Seminole Wars, and was also one of the most senior general officers in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. ALS signed “J. E. Johnston,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, June 10, 1848. Letter to Colonel Andrews concerning his recollection of a conversation referencing shortcuts to a promotion. According to Johnston, he was requested to use his influence with Winfield Scott, with apparently negative results for Andrews, in part: "It was understood between us, as I then thought that this was to be done without delay—On the following morning, in presence of Major Caldwell…you resumed the subject, saying you had been perfectly in earnest in what you had said the evening before. I repeated the main points. I told you I had so understood you, saw Capt. Scott that morning, told him your wish & the reason for it, was told that he would immediately refer the matter to the general. Saw him again in the course of the morning, when he told me that the Gen-in-chief would consent to the arrangement proposed by Col. Andrews, & that he could get the order whenever he pleased…I was never 'detailed to go home to fill up the regiment' and therefore such an attempt to hasten your resignation…would certainly have been compound swindling. This correction I regard as an important matter." In fine condition, with writing showing through from opposing sides.
