My own opinion of Delane is, that he is my most inveterate foe, & I think, nothing can exceed the systematic malignity of his articles against my government & myself especially. You are the best judge, whether you think such a man can ever be a faithful friends & confident for yourself. I only offered the Chan[cellorshi]p to you because I wished to make some public demonstration of my regard for & confidence in you. I only looked upon it, as a temporary resting place, until in some arrangements I contemplate, I shall be able to place you in a position of active duty." In very good to fine condition, with heavy soiling to the first and last pages. John Delane was a journalist and the editor of The Times, who had published news of Lennox's appointment as chancellor against wishes of confidentiality.
