Description

Ford on President Nixon: "He knows the communist mind and its philosophy"

TLS signed “Jerry Ford,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, personal Congress letterhead, February 5, 1972. Letter to Ed Hornburg on a variety of important national issues, in part: "Certainly there is no intention on the part of the President to keep the war in Vietnam going simply to hold down the population of the United States or any other country. President Nixon inherited this war and he has been withdrawing our troops and is working conscientiously to negotiate peace…Mr. Nixon is going to China only because of his interest in easing international tensions and promoting world peace. He knows the communist mind and its philosophy. He is not going to be fooled by the communist leaders of China. However, as President of the United States he does have the responsibility to be concerned with the security of our country not only now and in the near future but for the next two to four decades. He may not succeed in his trip to China but President Nixon is determined to do everything he can to promote peace and stability for our country now and in the future." In fine condition, with staple holes to upper left corner.
