Union general (1830–1909) who participated at Gettysburg and commanded the Army of Tennessee during Sherman’s March to the Sea. Civil War–dated ALS signed “O. O. Howard, Maj. Gen.,” one page, 5.25 x 8, Headquarters Eleventh Corps letterhead, December 31, 1863. Letter to US Army surgeon Dr. Suckley, in full: "It was with regret that we parted with you as our Med. Director and had not the place been filled before I knew you would be available, nothing would have pleased me more than your return. Your diligence and faithfulness in the discharge of your duty won my admiration. If I can ever be of any service to you, call upon me unhesitatingly." In fine condition.
