Description

Henry Clay

ALS signed “H. Clay,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 29, 1848. Letter to William C. C. Claiborne, in full: "I received your letter communicating the melancholy word of the death of Mr. Duralde. Our distress on account of it is much heightened by the painful manner of it. Poor fellow! that he, who had so many relations that tenderly loved him in Louisiana, should have lost his life for the want of necessary attention in his last illness! I handed your letter to Henry immediately on recovering it. He is now left alone, without father, mother, brother or sister. I hope that the great bereavement with which he has met may operate a favorable improvement on him. This has been a year of great affliction to us. Last week Mrs. Ross, a niece of Mrs. Clay, with whom I believe you were well acquainted, died after a lingering illness. We shall have to rely on you; my dear William, to save for Henry whatever he may be entitled to from his father's Estate. You promised me to see that he should receive what remains due to him from that of his mother. I am sorry that you did not bring Mrs. Claiborne and your children to us the past summer, instead of going over the Lake. I hope you will not neglect us the next. Mrs. Clay joins me in presenting our affectionate regards to Mrs. Claiborne and your children. And I regard you also to present them, with our sincere condolence to your Aunt Clay." In very good to fine condition, with small splits along intersecting folds, scattered light creasing, and two old pieces of tape along the left edge. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
