Painter and illustrator (1832–1883) known for his illustrated editions of books by Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Milton, and others. Unusual vintage sepia matte-finish 5.25 x 7.25 oval portrait of the artist in a head-and-shoulders pose, signed on the mat in ink, "G. Dore," who adds a series of notations to the lower portions of the mat, dating them "10 Mars 1870" and "23 Mars 1872," and signing his name at the conclusion of each. Matted to an overall size of 11 x 13.5. In fine condition, with a crease to the lower right edge and scattered light foxing. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
