Illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin (1730-1813) who served as the last colonial governor of New Jersey. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS as governor of New Jersey, signed “Wm. Franklin,” three pages, 13 x 16.5, December 6, 1769. Document in which the colonial assembly appoints a body of commissioners charged with obtaining supplies for British soldiers stationed in or marching through New Jersey. The act assigned commissioners to be responsible for specific sites, including the barracks at Burlington, New Brunswick, Elizabethtown, and Trenton. In part: "An Act appointing Commissioners for Surveying the several Barracks Erected in the Colony of New Jersey, with Furniture and other necessaries for Accommodating the Kings Troops in or marching thro the same, for Surveying Deficiencies and for defraying Incidental Charges." Prominently signed at the conclusion by Franklin, and countersigned by Cortland Skinner as Speaker of the House and Charles Read as Speaker of the governor's council. In very good condition, with small areas of paper loss, and archival tape reinforcements along fold separations. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
