Description

Thomas de Quincy

British author (1785–1859) best remembered for his now-classic memoir of his experiments with drugs, Confessions of an English Opium-Eater. ALS signed “T. de Q.,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 4.5, no date. In part: "Not being able to confer personally with your clerk, unless I had kept him waiting at a moment when I supposed him to be a in a hurry,—I left the arrangement to my son: and I now find that he has made the mistake of engaging for me that I shall be down in Pilt St. at 1/2 past 4. But this is impossible. Earlier than 10 minutes after 7, I shall be unable to leave the house:—accordingly, if that will suit the convenience of Mr. Burt and yourself, and also if I find from your answer that on other accounts it will not be useless for me to come,—I will be down exactly at 25 minutes past seven o'clock this Friday evening.—[Dancing will not commence, I suppose, till 10 o'clock, so that allowing for the time consumed in dressing, joining a distant party etc etc., perhaps the interval between 1/2 past 7 and 10 may be sufficient for those who are going to the Ball]." In fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
