A 1748 dispute involving Washington’s brother-in-law

Scholar, jurist, opponent of slavery (1726–1806) who was the first of the seven Virginia signatories of the Declaration of Independence. ADS, signed “Wythe,” one page both sides, 7 x 5.5, February 1748. Legal document for a case in Orange County, Virginia. In part: “Fielding Lewis complains of Thomas Chew otherwise called I. Thomas Chew of Orange County in Custody and so forth of a Plea of Debt that he render to him eighty Pounds Two Shillings and four Pence which he owes to and unjustly detains from him for that whereas the said Thomas…did acknowledge himself to be held and firmly bound unto the said Fielding.” Signed at the conclusion by Wythe as attorney for the plaintiff. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (one passing through a couple letters of the signature), scattered toning, a few stains, and a few small edge tears. Accompanied by an unsigned engraving of Wythe. Fielding Lewis married George Washington’s sister in 1750 and later served as a colonel in the Revolutionary War. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
