Description

The “United States” in 1780

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey (1737–1791) who is also known as the designer of the first official American flag. Revolutionary War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “F. Hopkinson,” one page, 7.25 x 3.75, September 15, 1780. An international currency exchange document, in part: “At Thirty Days Sight of this Fourth Bill, First, Second, and Third not paid, pay to John Brown or Order, Sixty Dollars, in Three Hundred Livres Tournois, for Interest of Money borrowed by the United States.” Signed at the conclusion by Hopkinson as treasurer of loans and countersigned by Thomas Smith as commissioner of the Continental Loan-Office of Pennsylvania. In fine condition, with trimming to the left edge. An especially notable document considering its war date and early usage of the term “United States,” which the Continental Congress had adopted as the new nation’s official name in September 1776. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
