Harlan of the Navy Department Division, in full: “I thank you for your congratulations upon my appointment to be Chief Justice.” In fine condition, with some light soiling. With President Harding’s nomination, Taft was sworn in as chief justice on July 11, 1921, giving him the distinction of being the only former president to ever hold such a title.
