Description

Sarah Bernhardt

Two ANSs in French, four pages in total, both 5.5 x 3.5, personal monogrammed letterhead, circa 1921. Both are purportedly addressed to Arthur Meyer, then editor of the French newspaper Gaulois. The first, signed “Sarah Bernhardt, 1921,” in part (translated): “I am appalled, charmed, proud of the beautiful compliment…paid me in your newspaper. Do I deserve all this? I don’t dare to believe I do. I do not believe it, but I am so afraid that what is left of my life is so short that I will never deserve it”; the second, signed “Sarah,” in full: “Please try the impossible! The impossible! This is very painful!” In overall fine condition. Accompanied by two unsigned period photogravures depicting Bernhardt as Cleopatra and as Mrs. Clarkson from The Stranger, and three vintage concert programs for the ‘farewell’ seasons of 1905–1906 and 1910–1911 bearing facsimile signatures. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
