Description

To his copyist on Piano Trio No. 1

ALS in German, signed “J. Br.,” one page on the reverse of a 5.5 x 3.25 postcard, no date but postmarked Wieden, September 2, 1889. Letter to his copyist Wilhelm Kupfer, in full (translated): “Tomorrow, Monday I think to arrive there and would be really delighted if I were to find my trio before me. Hopefully at that time I will see you too.” In fine condition, with two unobtrusive vertical creases, and two old tape remnants on the address side.

This likely refers to Brahms’s revision of Piano Trio in B Major, Op. 8, which he first composed during 1854. Scored for piano, violin, and cello, it is the only known work of Brahms to exist in two published versions, and it is this revised version which is most often performed today. The day after writing this letter, Brahms wrote to Clara Schumann to tell her that he had rewritten his B major trio, which lends credence to this conclusion. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
