Description

Dalton Trumbo

Academy Award–winning screenwriter (1905–1976) of such films as Spartacus, Exodus, and Papillon who attained worldwide notoriety as a member of the blacklisted ‘Hollywood Ten.’ TLS, one onionskin page, 8.5 x 11, January 4, 1961. Letter to Alpha Productions, in part: “You are about to enter into a lending agreement with Springfield Productions, Inc., in which Springfield Productions, Inc., agrees to furnish to you my services as a writer in connection with your photoplay entitled ‘Bunny Lake Is Missing.’ I have read said agreement and I hereby represent and warrant that Springfield Productions, Inc., has the right to furnish my services to you as provided therein and to grant the rights therein granted. I hereby agree that I will render my services in connection with said photoplay in accordance with all of the terms and conditions set forth in said agreement.” In fine condition. As a member of the blacklisted Hollywood community, Trumbo was forced to use the pseudonym Peter Finch, in addition to other aliases, in order to get past the dreaded Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals board. Under Finch, Trumbo wrote the first script for the Otto Preminger film, but entirely unsatisfied with its ‘talkiness,’ convinced Preminger to scrap his version; John and Penelope Mortimer were eventually tasked with rewriting the script.
