Description

Seventeen years before GWTW, the director notes he has, “much work to do in order to make a good picture”

ALS signed “Victor,” seven pages two sets of adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.5, Hotel Algonquin letterhead, postmarked August 1, 1922. Letter to actress Kathleen Clifford, in part: “We had a good day, shot target and watched the boys drill…Bob Kane and I just came from seeing the opening of ‘Prisoner of Zenda.’ I don’t think so much of it, afraid the papers will pan it in the a.m. Get my finished script tomorrow—just between us I am afraid it is not so good—that means I shall have much work to do in order to make a good picture, but you hold your thumbs for me dear and with—it may come out OK. I hope so…I’m sorry Arthur is having such a tough time with his picture—read all about the wedding in today’s papers—things may be better now—but not likely. Please do send me the test Fitz made of you…I shall be glad to see it—did they make any stills? Have not seen a show yet…My salary did not start until last week.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in his own hand. Accompanied by a reprint photo. Though he was a cinematographer on several films throughout the 1910s, Fleming did not make his directorial debut until 1919, and at the time of writing had just six director’s credits to his name. A very early letter with excellent cinematic content. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
