Description

President for a day

American politician (1807–1886) best remembered as the subject of a controversy over whether, as president pro tempore of the Senate, he technically served one day as US president in 1849 when Zachary Taylor declined to be inaugurated on the Sabbath. Though the unusual circumstances have since been widely analyzed and the notion of Atchison’s presidency discounted, the legend of his ‘tenure’ has become an enduring fixture of American political folklore. ALS signed “David R. Atchison,” one page, 7.75 x 9.5, May 14, 1844. Letter to Secretary of the Navy John G. Mason. In full: “In addition to the recommendations in favour of the appointment of Dr. Thomas R. Rootes Assistant Surgeon in the Navy, I have the honour of forwarding a letter of the same in part from M. M. Marmaduke Gov. of the Sate of Missouri.” Professionally inlaid into a larger sheet and in fine condition. From the collection of John Augustin Daly. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
