Description

Queen consort of France (1573–1642) as the second wife of King Henry IV of France. She herself was a member of the wealthy and powerful House of Medici. LS in French, signed “Marie,” one page, 8.25 x 12.5, September 12, 1615. Letter to Monsieur Gentil, in full (translated): “I have seen what you have written to me by your son, and the memoranda he has presented to me from you. I acknowledge the continuation of your affection for the service of the King my son, and the care you take to testify the results of it to him. I find it very convenient that you make the journey to which you are invited, and therefore I have ordered the dispensation to be made. You will inform us of what you think is worth it; and take every assurance of the goodwill of the King, and of me.” Countersigned at the conclusion by Paul Phelypeaux de Pontchartrain as secretary of state. Double-matted and framed with an engraving to an overall size of 20.25 x 18.25. In fine condition, with evidence of professional reinforcements and restorations along intersecting folds. During this period Marie had begun her journey from Paris to Bourdeaux, where her son, King Louis XIII, would soon wed Anne of Austria on November 28. Her court arrived at Poitiers on August 31 and would remain there until the end of September before heading south for the ceremony. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
