Description

Shortly after First Lady Ford’s mastectomy— “Betty continues to gain strength, buoyed by the prayers and thoughtfulness of so many kind people”

TLS as president signed “Jerry Ford,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 7, 1974. Letter to Robert McBain, in part: “During this past week Betty and I have received many kind messages. However, those that mean the most to us come from friends. I deeply appreciate your offer of assistance; you have always been there when we called on you. Betty continues to gain strength, buoyed by the prayers and thoughtfulness of so many kind people. Susan is proving to be an excellent White House hostess and Mike and Gayle’s presence has helped a lot.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope. On September 28, 1974, just weeks after becoming the first lady, Betty Ford underwent a mastectomy upon discovering she had breast cancer. Her braveness and transparency concerning the disease raised breast cancer awareness and prompted more women to self-examine. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
