Description

“‘My Methods of Work’ are always perverse and wholly uncontrollable”

Attractive ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, measuring 9 x 7.25 open, January 10, 1895. Letter to Charles T. Scott, in full: “Answering as directly as I can—and in the order as propounded—your list of questions, I think the true ‘Mission of the Novel’ is to delightfully entertain and wholesomely engage our minds when at holiday from the vexations and cares of exacting everyday business. ‘My favorite work’ depends on what the public seems most to favor—that is, I have schooled myself to recognize that the composite taste or estimate is (obviously) broader and better than the individual: therefore my original favorites are very perishable things indeed, so soon utterly supplanted by the public choice. ‘My Methods of Work’ are always perverse and wholly uncontrollable—in fact, I have no methods—the methods have me: Where I’m most needed at the post of business duty, then I want to break away and write things—and I generally do. That is, where my Methods dare to lead, I dare to follow!” Riley adds a brief postscript and signs with his initials, “Please give me word if this long belated promise of mine reaches you safely. JWR.” In fine condition, with a small old paper remnant at the top of the first page. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
