Description

John Cockroft

British physicist (1897–1967) who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for splitting the atomic nucleus with Ernest Walton, and was instrumental in the development of nuclear power. Two items: a TLS signed “J. D. Cockroft,” one page, 4.25 x 7, Atomic Energy Research Establishment letterhead, October 14, 1952. Letter to Mr. R. G. Fielder, in full: “Thank you for sending me a copy of the article in the Pasadena Star-News. I shall be glad to send you a copy of my Nobel Award address when I receive the reprints.” Also included is the aforementioned booklet for Cockroft’s 1951 Nobel Award address, entitled “Experiments on the Interaction of High Speed Nucleons with Atomic Nuclei,” 6.5 x 9.5, eighteen pages, signed on the inside cover in black ink, “With best wishes, J. D. Cockroft.” In overall fine condition, with light toning to the covers of the booklet. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
