Description

Thackeray declines to read an outline—”my opinions would be worth nothing—absolutely nothing”

ALS signed “W. M. Thackeray,” one page, 4.5 x 7, February 4, no year. Letter to Irish novelist Charles James Lever, in part: “Pray do not send your Drama to me for my opinion. I am overwhelmed with work already and have not the least desire…to pile up the agony. Besides, my opinions would be worth nothing—absolutely nothing. Why not send it without delay to W. C. M. He is as you know—or ought to know—a just and upright man, and would assuredly give you a favorable hearing. You will be glad to know that our friend Dr. Black continues to urge the reform I was telling about. He has issued another edition of his short, but lucid and exhaustive, plea. After reading his statements, every person interested in Literature must be amazed that the absurd anomaly has be [sic] so long tolerated.” In very good to fine condition. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
