Handwritten lyrics to Collins’s hit song ‘Something Happened on the Way to Heaven’ on two off-white 9 x 11.5 sheets, signed in black ink on a separate off-white 9.25 x 4 slip, “Phil Collins…But Seriously.” Collins pens six verses from the song, in part: “We had a life, we had a love / but you don't know what you've got til you lose it / well that was then and this is now / and I want you back / how many times can I say I'm sorry / I only wanted you as someone to love / but something happened on the way to heaven / it got a hold of me, and wouldn't let go / and I want you back / how many times can I say I'm sorry / You can run, and you can hide / but I'm not leaving less you come with me / we've had our problems but I'm on your side / you're all I need, please believe in me.” Both pages are respectively numbered in the lower right corner, “34” and “35,” and in the upper right corner, “1” and “2.” In fine condition, with paper loss to top edge, affecting none of the writing. Given that these exact handwritten lyrics were written out by Collins specifically for inclusion on the inner sleeve of his album …But Seriously, this is a wonderfully appealing example of his smash-hit song.
