Two items: a rare complete issue of the Chicago Daily Tribune of November 3, 1948, 17 x 24, featuring the iconic banner headline "Dewey Defeats Truman”; and an FDC (First Day Cover) with a cachet honoring the election of Luis Munoz Marin as the first Governor of Puerto Rico, signed in black ink by Truman, postmarked April 27, 1949. In overall very good to fine condition.
An edition of the most famous wrong-call in American political history .On Election day in 1948 most national polls showed Governor Dewey safely ahead and was predicted to win the Presidency. The majority of the nation’s newspapers endorsed the Republican challenger as well. On election night, the early returns showed Dewey ahead. This edition was set in type by inexperienced workers brought in because of a strike at the paper. Thus the tell-tale “issue-point” of this edition: the 5 lines on the far –right column that are printed upside down.
After printing and delivery of this edition, the gap between Truman and Dewey started to shrink. As the democratic votes piled up, so did panic among Tribune officials. Staffers were sent out to stop delivery trucks, and even to scoop up newspapers not yet retrieved from people’s lawns. Many were reclaimed but this example was not.
Original , complete editions of this newspaper in nice ,clean condition like this one are becoming increasingly scarce.
