Truman’s mention of the “Pendergast Club” is particularly interesting as it refers to the organization of Missouri political machine boss Tom Pendergast, who had helped Truman launch his career; despite Truman’s honest integrity, this association was often a point of criticism early on in his public life. The “political spasm” he mentions must be a reference to the upcoming 1952 election in which Dwight Eisenhower, as predicted, swept to a commanding victory.
