Description

Reagan shares the success of the 1987 Washington Summit

ALS, one page, 6.25 x 8.5, personal letterhead, May 18, 1989. Letter to Marshall Coyne, owner of Washington, D.C.’s Madison Hotel, in full: “I have just finished reading the account of all that you and your fine staff did to provide food and shelter for our Soviet visitors during the recent summit meeting. You all truly served above and beyond the call of duty. You also made a major contribution to the success of the summit. I wasn’t aware at the time of the magnificent effort you put forth, but now I want to tell you how very grateful I am to you and your people. I am lost in admiration of the many crisis [sic] you faced and your skill in handling them. You made that fine hotel, the Madison a veritable monument of the warmest hospitality.” In fine condition. After their unsuccessful talks at the Reykjavik Summit of 1986, President Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev reconvened in Washington a year later for a three-day deliberation of global conflicts, arms control issues, and human rights. The most notable achievement of the conference was the signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a deal which terminated the production of intermediate range nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
