Uncommon ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, June 24, no year. Letter to Mr. Gallup, in full: “I do not think that there is a photo of myself to be found in New York. I never had but one taken, and I have labor[ed] hard to suppress that one. I think I have succeeded for the McClures tell me that it is no longer in their possession. I have tried hard to keep photos and all personal matters out of print in order to secure some of the distinction there is (in these days) in not having one’s picture in the papers. McClure’s did get a few reproductions run in their advertising pages; but I am pleased to know that there will be no more of that. I would be glad to grant your request if I could, but I am happy to say (in accordance with my views as stated) that I don’t believe a picture of me could be had from any source.” In fine condition, with adhesive remnants to reverse of second integral page. With its crisp writing and clean signature, this is an exceptional letter from the famed short story writer, who remains quite scarce in such a handwritten format. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
